MLQ is the acronym for the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. It is based on the transformational model of leadership (Bass & Aviolio, 1996). The MLQ measures leadership styles that can be grouped under three broad categories ranging from passive to transformative leadership behaviours (1) transformational leadership (2) transactional leadership (3) passive-avoidant leadership.

 

There have been a large number of studies conducted on the transformative leadership model. Some findings of research include:

 

- Transformational leaders create greater cohesion, committment, and turnover

- Transformational leaders create safer work environments

- Transformational leadership training improves leadership and associated performance over time

- Scores on transformational leadership predicts individual and group performance
