Re-imagining curriculum for infants

An introduction to schemas—understand their role as a basis for curriculum planning, opening up new and exciting possibilities for the children and educators Presented by Philip Butler

Description

If you work with infants and 2-3’s and haven’t yet had the opportunity to work with or learn about schemas, this will be your most important workshop this year. Understanding schemas and their role in young children’s learning and development will take your engagement with them, and planning for them, to the next level. Schema play is especially important for infants and 2-3’s. Tipping, hiding, posting, bashing, banging, pushing, pulling – repetition and trial and error are the key features of this type of learning. What does this thing do? What happens if I drop it? Will it break if I hit it? What if I hit it again? Young children want the answers to all these questions and will persevere until they have them. Curiosity and questions are how they make sense of the world and those around them, one action at a time. Using your understanding of the children and schemas as a basis for curriculum planning can open up new and exciting possibilities for the children and educators.

Completing Re-imagining curriculum for infants contributes one hour of PD that aligns with the NESA (NSW) criteria for Elective PD and addresses:

The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: Professional Practice APST 3: Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning

The Early Years Learning Framework Learning Outcomes: Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners
