Re-imagining curriculum for infants

If you work with infants and 2-3’s and haven’t yet had the opportunity to work with or learn about schemas, this will be your most important workshop this year. Understanding schemas and their role in young children’s learning and development will take your engagement with them, and planning for them, to the next level. Schema play is especially important for infants and 2-3’s. Tipping, hiding, posting, bashing, banging, pushing, pulling – repetition and trial and error are the key features of this type of learning. What does this thing do? What happens if I drop it? Will it break if I hit it? What if I hit it again? Young children want the answers to all these questions and will persevere until they have them. Curiosity and questions are how they make sense of the world and those around them, one action at a time. Using your understanding of the children and schemas as a basis for curriculum planning can open up new and exciting possibilities for the children and educators.
