CoP 24 | Investigating the VEYLDF Practice Principle: Assessment for Learning and Development

This CoP offers an opportunity to discuss why contemporary learning focuses on HOW children learn. Assessment of children’s knowledge, understandings, skills, and capabilities is essential for planning and promoting new learning and development. Assessment is designed to discover what children know, understand, and can do. They benefit when assessment reflects a whole-child approach that may include their health and wellbeing, reveals strengths, and shows what might next be learnt. VEYLDF p.13

Description

Selecting from the range of assessment tools and techniques and ensuring authentic assessment to provide an accurate and holistic view of child can be daunting.  This COP invites participants to expand their knowledge of this critical component to progress children’s learning and development. Elements to investigate will be directed by participants, some possibilities may include:

  • What are some strategies to engage and collaborate with families to gather knowledge, expectations and understandings of their child’s learning and development?
  • How might I encourage and include children’s self-assessment of their learning?
  • I’m not confident in deciding what is meaningful and effective to progress a child’s learning toward the VEYLDF outcomes – how to do I make decisions about next steps for the child?
