Drawing to learn, learning to draw: Designing environments and experiences that amplify drawing as an act of expression and meaning making

Presented by Kirsty Liljegren

Description

This webinar will delve deeply into the rich possibilities for learning when we understand the significance of mark-making and drawing as a complex and creative process in children's lives.

Thinking beyond the product of drawing, we will immerse ourselves in how 'children use visual language as a means of inquiry, as a playful way to imagine new possibilities and make their ideas visible' (Kolbe, 2014).

Working from this place of understanding enables a different way of noticing, planning, and designing environments and proposals for children's encounters.

There will be a focus on:

  • The importance of giving children time to explore the sensorial properties of tools and what we notice in the process
  • Materials that invite children to communicate, express, and represent their feelings, ideas, and thinking
  • The role of drawing and mark-making as a generative act
  • The visual arts as an invaluable tool in the construction and co-construction of knowledge
  • How contexts can stimulate and support children's early literacy processes of experimentation, discovery, and meaning-making
  • What these ideas mean for our role as educators

Participating in this webinar will leave you feeling renewed and awakened to possibilities, along with many practical suggestions to make a difference in your context.

Completing Drawing to learn, learning to draw: Designing environments and experiences that amplify drawing as an act of expression and meaning making will contribute one hour of PD that aligns with the NESA (NSW) criteria for Elective PD and addresses:

The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: APST 1: Know children and how they learn

The Early Years Learning Framework Learning Outcomes: Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators
