Beyond crayons and A4 Paper

Presented by David Gilkes

Description

Children need and have the right to a wide range of good quality materials that allow for multiple ways of expressing their ideas, imagination and creativity - materials that are open to possibilities, invitational, accessible and aesthetically pleasing. When children have beautiful and differing materials to work with, we are able to gain greater insights into their theories and meaning-making processes, and the children’s innovation and levels of engagement increase. How can we go beyond a limited range of options, and what might be the outcomes if we choose to offer more than just predictable or bland materials? What might happen if we open ourselves more fully to listening to the children’s desire for a wider palette of mediums? What richness can emerge in our environments and spaces when we give greater attention to the voices of materials? This webinar will support participants to consider the choices given to materials and to think about the many varied ways children express their understandings and make sense of the world around them.
